What does a volunteer have to do?
Although this is a VOLUNTEER service, the word VOLUNTEER takes on a little different meaning when it comes to VOLUNTEERING with an ambulance service. Volunteering with a Search and Rescue Service means being a little more dedicated than normal. After all, we are dealing with people’s lives!
An ambulance service is held to a higher standard than most other volunteer agencies. The State of Alabama Office of EMS and Trauma has many requirements that must be met in order to maintain licensure as an Advanced Life Support ambulance service.
If you want to ride on the ambulance:
Due to these regulations, there are a few things that we ask of our volunteers. We ask that you be certified in CPR. We can provide that training! We ask that you become a certified ambulance driver by taking the Emergency Vehicle Operators Course (EVOC). Guess what, we can provide that training, too! We also would prefer that you become an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), but it is not mandatory. We can’t teach the EMT course in-house, but we CAN get you the training. We also ask that you attend a training session at the squad building at least once per month. Trainings are usually held on the 3rd Tuesday night at 7:00 pm, and the 3rd Saturday morning at 8:00 am.
If you DO NOT want to ride on the ambulance:
We still ask that you at least become CPR and EVOC certified. We also ask that you attend a training session at the squad building at least once per month. Trainings are usually held on the 3rd Tuesday night at 7:00 pm, and the 3rd Saturday morning at 8:00 am.
